I shrugged. We had been fighting non-stop, and the beetles hadn't seemed to stop coming. "Well, I guess it wouldn’t hurt to meet her. What's her specialty?"

"She specializes in life and healing magic," Rivia answered.

"Why does that sound familiar?" I mused aloud.

"Probably because she's the royal healer," Rivia explained. "It's a prestigious position and not an easy one."

"Wait, I have to meet the royal healer now?" I asked, incredulous.

"We've got a few anchors who are the best at what they do," Rivia answered. "The royal healer is just one."

"And we get to visit them and say, 'Hey, come live in the woods and get bonded to a death mage, but we're going to make it worth your while.' How is this the life I'm leading?"

Rivia snickered. "It's not an easy life, but the perks are nice."

"Yeah, we've got a castle."

"Well, not just a castle," Rivia said. "I've been inside. It's quite something."

"It's just a big pile of rocks," I replied, thinking of my old home. "The only difference is a roof and a door. Well, and it has more rooms."

"Oh? What were the other rooms like?" Rivia pressed.

"My mother and I lived in the only room," I told her.

Rivia frowned. "That must have been... cramped."

"We had a table, chairs, and a bed. That was it. We cooked outside or went into town." I shrugged.

"And now you have a castle and a wife who will cook for you, as will any anchor," Rivia teased.

"I guess." I still felt guilty about living in the castle. I wasn't a noble. I hadn't grown up in the lap of luxury.

"Well, maybe the other anchors will have tips," Rivia encouraged. "You can ask them what it is like to live in the castle or be bonded to royalty."

"If the other anchors are nobles, I don't see them agreeing to talk to me," I pointed out. "They'll think they are too good for me."

Rivia gave a short laugh. "They'd be dead wrong. But honestly? Some of the most prestigious families are already tied to someone else. I know I said royalty, but many of the royal lines are also anchors. That's why anchors hold such prestige. In the right family, there's a good chance you'll find an anchor."

I thought it through for a moment. "So you mean there won't be any available anchors?"

"You're assuming that any would have been given to the nobility in the first place. When magic-users show up, they have a lot of choices for bonding. Not everyone takes the most prestigious offer," Rivia said, clearly proud of the fact that she was bonded to someone who wasn't nobility.

Caelic snorted from his position. "They should. That's where you belong."

Rivia ignored him and focused on me.

My heart raced, and the sweat on my palms only made it easier to slip my staff between them.

It had only been a short fight, but there was still a sense of panic from the suddenness and speed of the attack. The beetles had moved swiftly for their size,
